Take Your Career Horizontal for Long Term Growth

Take Your Career Horizontal for Long Term Growth As the workplace undergoes tectonic shifts under the weight of rapid technological change, a social media revolution, and new global economic realities, we need to rethink how to protect and grow our careersby moving away from traditional, vertical job tracks, to a more holistic and horizontal approach. Its time for a paradigm shift, and executives at all levels must think hard about what will make them relevant and employable in the coming years. And thats not by simply standing still and hoping for the best its by embracing constructive change and new challenges. The way it used to beWhen we think of traditional job advancement, we think of applying similar skills in a more demanding environment for better pay and a better title.Historically, changing your role within a company was often thought of as a linear progression, and companies placed most employees on what seemed like a straight and narrow road. To advance, they needed to get better at what they already did, and few managers and executives considered moving employees to new departments. But the game is changing, and although vertical career planning can often appear sufficient, it can just as often be limiting and perilous. At its worst, a vertical career focus creates a scenario where employees have fewer marketable skills if they are ever laid off, meaning finding a new job can be surprisingly difficult.Fortunately, horizontal career planning can help to rectify this problem. By focusing on building new skills in other core areas important in your industry can make you much more attractive to your current employer and others you might be interested in working for down the road. Getting smarter and more versatile is a win-win for both you and your company. What the new workplace offers and demandsPut simply, a well-rounded hintergrund means more job opportunities.Tod ay, as the workplace changes, employers increasingly seek out well-rounded employees. Market demands often require companies to shift their focus quickly, and having versatile employees can make dealing with these demands simpler. In addition, multi-talented employees are better able to produce work that fuses well with other departments.A copywriter with web development knowledge, for example, will be better able to write effective online copy a salesperson with engineering skills will be well-positioned to improve sales processes a marketer with social media expertise can add innovation to the marketing process and so onBe constantly learningSo what can you do to get into the horizontal career planning mindset? First, identify where you want to grow your expertise. Then seek out internal and external avenues to explore your new focus. Be creative and enthusiastic about developing new skills, always knowing its for a good causethe prosperity and longevity of your career.Besides com pany training, industry events or organizations, and continuing education coursework, the web has opened the doors to a host of new, low cost learning opportunities. Platforms like Skillshare, Udemy, iTunes U, General Assembly, Coursera, and various TED Talks provide great training on various topics. And each learning experience will open doors you never would have thought of before.ConclusionIn order to stay relevant and consistently bring value to your employer and enhance your career, avoid being pigeon-holed into one vertical area of professional expertise. Instead, to increase your marketability over the long haul, invest in horizontal career planning. As time goes by, having multiple areas of expertise wont be an option. It will be a requirement to stay relevant and employable. So dive in nowThe result will be a more resilient foundation for your success.

Use Free Time to Advance Your Job Search

Use Free Time to Advance Your Job SearchUse Free Time to Advance Your Job SearchWeve all heard this one Its easier to find a job when you already have one. Which makes sense. Employers are always willing to hire someone another company has vetted and entrusted. What this old adage doesnt factor in is the time it takes to conduct a job search. When youre looking for a job, the process itself can amount to a full-time job.How are you supposed to add the commitment of a job search to your busy work schedule? It requires some discipline, but it can be done. You just need to divide the elements of your job search among the bits of free time you have throughout the week.1. 5-10 minutesThis is the amount of time we most often waste. How many of us make a point of being productive when we have five extra minutes? With a little determination, you can turn five minutes here and there into a vital part of your job search process. You just have to fill those five-minute gaps wisely.Browsing job listings can be accomplished in small bits of time. Websites such as Simply Hired make it possible to take your job search anywhere. Job listings can be accessed from your smart phone. Thats right- all that time spent playing Candy Crush could be bettering your career. So download a job search app (Simply Hired has one available on iTunes and Android), and use those five minutes to your advantage.Tip If youre using the Simply Hired mobile app, sort job listings by date. This way you can minimize the time you spend looking at old jobs and allow no new jobs to slip under your radar.Consider signing up for an email alert service, which Simply Hired also offers. Email alerts provide you with a daily update of jobs posted with your keywords of choice, which is great for filling five minutes, because how long does it take to read an email?2. An hourLets say you get home from work at 630 p.m. and have a dinner reservation at 8 p.m. You may need to block out a few minutes to freshen up and reserve some time for travel. Besides that you have a solid hour with nothing to do. Everyone has behauptung blocks of time between activities. During your job search you need to make the most of them.An hour isnt enough time to rewrite a resume or compose a cover letter. It is enough time to jump on LinkedIn or Twitter and read news thats related to your industry and to network with other professionals on social media. Companies always use referrals to fill job openings, so engage with individuals in your industry. Sharing items and commenting in discussion groups can be a great way make networking connections. If you can track down recruiters, hiring managers, etc., and make yourself known, you can develop an inside track to a job.Bonus Staying up on industry news, as discussed here, can prove useful during the job interview process. So when you have an hour to spare, do some industry reading as well.3. A lazy Sunday or a rainy dayI live in San Francisco, so I get treated to a num ber of wet days when its rather pointless to even leave the house if I want to keep my feet dry. Maybe you endure rainy days, and youve certainly had a lazy Sunday. Instead of letting it turn into a lost day, spend time wrapping up some of the more time-consuming aspects of your job search such as the application process, resume or cover letter.Sunday is a great day to finalize your application because youll want to send it on Monday morning. Studies show Monday is the best day of the week to apply for a job. Be among the Monday applicants by finishing your application on Sunday.4. Your lunch breakIt can be tricky to conduct a job search when you have a job, especially once youre in the phone and in-person interview stages. There may be a temptation to use your lunch break to schedule these activities. This is risky. How often is your lunch break delayed? How often do 11 a.m. meetings run long? Now imagine youre sitting in that meeting and your interviewer calls and your phone vibra tes. Not good. Its always better to avoid booking yourself during your lunch break. Use lunch to network or post updates to your professional social channels. If you need time for an interview, take a day off or get permission to leave work early. The interviewer knows youre employed and will work around your schedule.Although a job search can be time-consuming, you can fit it into the various chunks of time you have throughout your week. The trick is recognizing what you can accomplish in the time you have.

Boost Your Resume the Right Way! How to Become Strategically Well-Rounded

Boost Your Resume the Right Way! How to Become Strategically Well-Rounded Boost Your Resume the Right Way! How to Become Strategically Well-Rounded So you eat healthy (most of the time), you go to the gym, you give 100% at work, you volunteer on the weekends, and you also make sure to enjoy yourself with friends. You, by all accounts, are considered well-rounded.Kudos to you! Now, let’s apply that to your professional life. Even though you’re great at your current job duties, being well-rounded professionally- which means gaining experience beyond just one functional area- is an important element to your long-term success. Why? Because being well-rounded means you can step outside of your current role and take on new things- and that’s how you get the exciting new assignments and projects, which often don’t actually “fit” into anyone’s job description. What’s more, as you climb the ladder and are up for management positions, you’ll need skills in a variety of different areas to help you succeed. If you’re currently a social media manager but eventually want to head up a marketing department, for example, you†™ll need to pick up expertise in brand development, advertising, and finance, too. That said, there’s a difference between collecting random skills and gaining new experiences that will make you strategically well-rounded. So, here are a few questions to ask yourself to identify the skills that will be most important for your future- so you can go out and build them. What Gaps in Knowledge Do I Have?First, pull out your resume and take inventory of yourself. What are some valuable qualities or skills you already possess- and what do you wish you had? You’ll often identify strategic skills just by paying attention to your gaps or areas of weakness and identifying ways to strengthen them.If you know you struggle with delegation or want to hone your leadership traits, for example, perhaps you could take on an intern or mentor junior employees.  Or, if your emails tend to be long-winded or you wish you were a better communicator, taking a writing class would be a great way to grow.Wha t Skills Do Those Around Me Have?Next, look around, and start noticing what other “well-rounded” colleagues or clients are doing. Particularly consider people in the positions you want to move into or attain: What do they do well, what could they do better, and what skill sets do their positions require? If everyone in the level above you has to manage budgets, for example, look for ways to plan budgets on smaller projects or events. If most people in the roles you’re checking out at PR companies have experience in public speaking, that’s a great place to focus your time and energy. What Gaps in Knowledge Does My Team Have?On the flip side, pay attention to the knowledge gaps on your team. If there’s knowledge or experience that no one else really has- but that could help you all on an upcoming project- that could be a great place for you to take on new skills and really shine. For instance, if no one in the department ever wants to make client presentations, getting some pu blic speaking training would be a huge boost for the team. If no one on your email marketing team knows how to code, why not take on the challenge? What Characteristics Does My Boss Value Most? Finally, think, watch, and listen to your boss. Consider the characteristics she possesses, as well as the ones that she doesn’t, and fill in the gaps. If you can handle tasks that would otherwise be challenging for her (say, you know she loathes Excel), that’s an easy way to make life easier for her and at the same time take on more responsibility. Also listen to the comments and compliments she gives. What traits does your boss admire in others? What praise has she given lately and to whom? Through this type of feedback, you can glean the qualities that she values- and get to work on those skills.Being well-rounded doesn’t mean you have to be great at everything, or even involved in every aspect of your company’s work. But if you strategically expand your expertise based on your own st rengths and weaknesses and those of your team, you’ll add a huge amount of value to your organization- not to mention your resume.Photo of woman working courtesy of Shutterstock.

Volunteer Work On Your Resume

Volunteer Work On Your Resume Volunteer Work On Your Resume For many nonprofits the holidays are the peak season ushering in an increased volume of donations and volunteer service hours. It’s also the time, for many nonprofits, when the populations they support are most in need of the aid they supply. Some nonprofits collect food, coats, boots, gifts and an array of other items, others implement holiday programs or projects at fine arts venues, schools, community centers and churches. Nonprofits reflect the needs of their communities. Furthering their missions is a noble endeavor that can also be good for your resume. Americans have historically been resounding in their service efforts. According to Charity Navigator,  2013 saw approximately 62.6 million Americans volunteering an estimated 7.7 billion hours. Those hours of labor add up to an estimated $173 billion. The holidays are a great time to jump on the bandwagon. Keep these tips in mind to make your efforts mutually beneficial for you and the charity you choose.   Find cultural fit Be as reflective with the service opportunities you pursue as you are with the professional opportunities you seek. Do your homework as you consider which charity you would like to support. Attend one of its events. Talk with someone who works or volunteers there. Get a sense of what the organization is like before you pledge your time and energy towards furthering its agenda. You want to make sure that the organization is well run and that it has a good program for volunteers. Charity Navigator’s “Guide to Volunteering”  offers some additional considerations. Find a volunteer position that suits you   Volunteering is valuable on your resume only if it adds to your professional skills. Make sure that the work you will be doing is resume-building. If you are looking for an accounting job, for example, a volunteer position hauling boxes may show a hiring manager that you are a nice person but that doesn’t tie your skills to accounting. A volunteer position that does this would be a better use of your time. If the volunteer coordinator needs someone who can inventory those boxes, then you may have found a resume-building volunteer job. You may be surprised to find that most nonprofits interview volunteers. This is a good thing. It gives you a chance to discuss your professional needs and goals with the volunteer coordinator who can then fill you in on what the organization needs, allowing you to find a mutually beneficial role. Be ready to go the distance Make a commitment that is independant of your job search. Sure, things might change; in fact, hopefully they will and you will find yourself busier than when you first took on this volunteer job. But take this position with the aim of being loyal to it and fulfilling your obligation to it, even if your job situation changes. You are not just taking this position for the holidays or for the resume-building perk it may afford you. Nonprofits need the help of experts like you. So plan to stick with this and make this position your own. Be proud of this. You are doing important work out of the kindness of your heart. That’s impressive as well as resume-building.

This is when to be honest during your exit interview

This is when to be honest during your exit interview This is when to be honest during your exit interview An exit interview is the final official goodbye before an employee and a company part ways. The hard work of finding a new job is over. The end is almost in sight. But there is still one last hurdle to clear - the final interaction between you and human resources on why you are leaving and what led you to accept a new job. This is where the conversation can become a minefield, and you must balance honesty with tact. Above all, you want to leave the job gracefully with your reputation intact. Here’s how to do it right:The case for tactful honestyIf you work in an open, trusting work environment, you should feel comfortable with giving honest feedback about how your experience at the company went and how it can be improved - with some caveats.Be sure to pepper your critiques with positive experiences, so that the conversation does not seem lopsided to your audience. Even though you are on your way out, you are still working on impression management. Reputations about your profession alism can last longer than any one job.But in this environment of good managers, you should feel safe to open up. If you have a good manager, helpful feedback is going to be welcome. Ask a Manager’s Alison Green said that good managers want to hear how they can improve. “Assuming they’ve seemed reasonably open to feedback in the past, my advice is to be honest about the things that bothered you,” she writes. “And assuming you can do so without resorting to lying, balance it out with comments about things you did like so that you don’t leave them with an impression of overwhelming disgruntlement.”The case for keeping quietUnfortunately, not every employee has the luxury of working in an open, trusting environment where their feedback will get heard. This is where you must choose your words more carefully. For employees who have endured bad bosses and unhealthy office politics, it can be tempting to make the exit interview an airing of grievances. Emotions can run high wh en you are under heavy stress and frustration.“What can they do? Fire me? I already quit!” the vengeful employee thinks. But under this mindset, a critique of the company becomes a personal attack, and this can pave a path to destruction. Exit interviews are the last impression employees leave with a company. Industries can be smaller than you imagine. If you want to throw a colleague under the bus, you better hope that you do not need them as a personal reference in the future.“What if one of those same managers that you scorched is hired into your new company in a position of authority, even your direct boss? I’ve seen this more than a few times,” Ian Matthews, a senior executive, told Quora.Instead of blaming widely, focus on specific examples of improvement related to work that you can back up, as Wendy Bliss, a human-resources consultant, advises: “Instead of saying your boss is terrible and everybody hates him, you might say, ‘He was very dedicated to the job and always had his eye on results for the company, and sometimes that dedication led him to be overly involved in employees’ work.’ ”You may also want to consider the audience of your feedback. Who is the person you are going to be having this conversation with? Do you trust them?If you work in a toxic workplace where bosses will retaliate, focus on leaving unscathed. Keep your answers focused on how the new job is so awesome that you could not possibly refuse, rather than focusing on how this job was so terrible you could not wait to get out.In these cases, you can comfort yourself with the knowledge that even though you were unable to fully speak your mind, you made it out intact.

Beyond the Litmus Test

Beyond the Litmus Test Beyond the Litmus Test Beyond the Litmus Test The worlds sick do not always have access to accurate diagnostic tools or the medical personnel capable of reading them. Unfortunately, its nearly impossible to bring physical labs and the people needed to run them to every corner of the globe. Ramses Martinez, a professor of industrial and biomedical engineering at Purdue University, wanted to fix that problem. What we needed was to find a very low-cost substrate that would be widely available, and be able to be produced by any country, he says. The material that met these requirements was paper and he and his lab soon got to work creating a paper lab. The lab is rectangle of paper small enough to fit into the palm of a hand. It has four test areas where healthcare workers or others in the field can place samples, such as blood or saliva. The whole device can be plugged into an inexpensive electronic device called a potentiostat that includes a chip that can analyze samples. The results change the color of ten squares on the paper, similar to how litmus paper works. The whole thing can be run by tapping it, thanks to a friction-powered sheet attached the paper. Currently the lab can test for liver and kidney problems, malnutrition, or anemia. Eventually the paper lab will be able to test for malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, hepatitis, and HIV. Schematics of the microfluidic layer of the SPED. Image: Purdue University Martinez and his colleagues found that paper alone had some problems. Places near the equatorial belt were too humidwater from the atmosphere would be absorbed by the paper and would ruin its diagnostic abilities. To overcome the issue, Martinez added a Teflon-like coating to areas of the paper that needed to stay dry. The non-coated areas become micro channels to bring a sample to the tiny reservoirs for testing. The paper lab, however, still needed a small amount of energy to power the chip with the algorithms. Martinez created a thin triboelectric generator, which creates electricity through friction, and coupled it with the paper lab. Researchers simply put the lab in their coat or pant pocket and begin walking to charge it. If the system is completely discharged you just need to tap it for two or the minutes, then you are ready to run a test, says Martinez, describing how little friction it takes for the generator to create electricity. Even a perfectly operating microneeds to be read properly to be effective. But the changes of color on the paper are not always obvious to the human eye. Humans are not good at perceiving color in an accurate way, Martinez says. To fix that, researchers created an app and an algorithm that could do the work. You can take a picture with your phone, and then the algorithm locates the device. And since it knows the paper is white, it does color correction and removes any artifacts from the picture, Martinez says. You can get a much better result than human brains when they have to give an interpretation of what something looks like. With the self-powered, paper-based electrochemical devices, or SPEDs, already in working order, the next step is to get them into he hands of early responders. The only hurdle to making that happen is getting FDA approval, usually a time consuming process. Once the SPED has become an established tool, hospitals in both the developing and the developed world stand to benefit. Anyone who is sick, but not sure they need to head to the emergency room could use a SPED to figure out whats wrong, alleviating demands on hospitals. After the paper lab has been use, it can be easily burned, obviating the need for a biohazard bin. If all goes as planned for Martinez and his team, a tiny piece of paper could be responsible for diagnosing some of the worlds most life-threatening diseases. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. What we needed was to find a very low cost substrate that would be widely available, and be able to be produced by any country.Prof. Ramses Martinez, Purdue University

Why Performance Feedback Should be More Frequent

Why Performance Feedback Should be More Frequent Why Performance Feedback Should be More Frequent Why Performance Feedback Should Be More Frequent Than Once a Year Do you seek professional feedback on a regular basis? If not, it’s time to start. As an employee, if I didn't receive feedback, I had no problem knocking on my manager's door to ask how I was doing on a regular basis. I know they say no news is good news, but I also know that many managers will avoid tough conversations about performance. Even if all is going well, I still find it's helpful to converse about work processes and to obtain real-time feedback on what's working (and not working) to allow for idea generation and forward momentum. As a former employee, manager, and human resources professional, I understand how difficult it can be to hold performance discussions and complete performance appraisals from all perspectives. Managers and employees alike find it's a challenge to make the time in their busy schedules, and not to mention, discussions required as a result of poor performance are not fun. However, these are not viable excuses for managers to escape the responsibility of providing performance feedback to employees nor are they good excuses for employees to give up on their performance management or career development. Do performance appraisals add value? Constructive communication around performance adds value to the organization and employees and is effective when correctly and thoroughly completed by managers and employees. Aside from the obvious record of performance, real-time feedback can provide guidance to support succession planning, developmental opportunities and needs, merit pay and salary increases, promotions, terminations, and severance programs. Performance appraisals are also an opportunity to reward and acknowledge employees for a job well done and for managers and employees to communicate openly about performance, allowing them to work together to develop goals and objectives for the upcoming year in an ideal world, that is. Who should be taking the lead and initiating performance discussions? Performance discussions even if they're brief in nature should frequently occur throughout the year, and your manager should be taking the lead on this. Common practice indicates they might not, however. Performance management programs are often set up for annual performance reviews, which unintentionally promotes this type of behavior. Therefore, it's important that you take the lead for regular discussions about performance if your manager does not. The benefit of doing so includes: Being clear that you're meeting your manager's expectations, as well as clearly understanding what those expectations are. Avoiding the surprise of finding out you're not meeting your manager's expectations. Finding out sooner rather than later that your manager isn't thrilled with your performance means it will (hopefully) be easier for you to get back on track. Identifying developmental opportunities in a timely fashion when you need them (instead of six months to a year later). Showing initiative and that you care about your work and development. Building a stronger relationship with your manager. What steps can employees take to support performance management and feedback? To help you better support performance management discussions throughout the year, as well as your role in your organization's performance appraisal process, consider the following tips. It's OK to ask for feedback First, get clear that it's OK to ask for performance feedback if it's not in your manager's nature to give it to you. Your career development depends on it. In the SHRM Job Satisfaction and Engagement research report, two of the top five most important aspects of job satisfaction for employees were communication with senior management and their relationship with their supervisors. In other words, you're not alone in your desire for communication with your manager. Annual performance reviews just won't cut it, so schedule the time to speak with your manager about your performance. Schedule a conversation with your manager every one to two months Let your manager know you'd like to send an invitation to set up regular 30-minute meetings once a month, or every other month, to discuss your performance and current priorities. By doing this, it will allow you to be clear on what your manager's expectations are and how you're doing from their perspective. This is especially important if you're new to an organization. As time goes on, you might feel you need to meet less frequently with your manager, so every two to three months could work. You can also work with your manager to discuss how frequently you should meet as you also want to be respectful of your manager's busy schedule. A good manager will want to honor your request and will hopefully see the value in your meetings. On that note, be prepared for the meetings with your manager by having a list of items to discuss, so you can stay focused and on topic without wasting time when you meet. If you sense your manager is unhappy, initiate a conversation as soon as possible Trust your intuition if you sense something is out of sync with your manager and your performance, and schedule some time to discuss it sooner rather than later. This will help you clarify if there is an issue, allow you to get real-time feedback, and if there is an issue, you'll be able to correct it before it gets worse. Taking this approach also shows that you have initiative and care about your performance. Know the performance appraisal process and how your salary is tied to it As is the case with any policy or procedure that comes with your employment, it's a good idea to understand your organization's performance management process, including the type of appraisal process used and how salary is tied to it. It's very common for organizations to use performance appraisals to support salary increases and terminations. Many organizations utilize a rating scale or ranking system, where you're given a number based on your performance compared to a specific set of factors. Other organizations use a 360-degree feedback approach, where peers and other managers are asked to provide input to better form a comprehensive perspective of an employee's performance. Other approaches to performance management include an objective-driven performance management process, where an individual is given specific objectives and the rating is based on the results of meeting those objectives, or it's a purely qualitative approach without a scale or rating system. Reviews might be required quarterly or bi-annually, but the most common approach is an annual performance review. Track information throughout the year When completing your portion of the performance appraisal, it can be hard to recall everything you did and accomplished throughout the year. This is why it's in your best interest to document your work activities throughout the year, even though it can feel inconvenient to do so at the time. It will save you a lot of time and hassle when it comes time to complete your appraisal and will also ensure you don't miss anything. It will also make it easier to update your resume if the need should ever arise, as well. Give your appraisal some thought An appraisal is a document that will remain in your employee file for at least as long as you're employed with the organization. If the need arises, it could be used as a legal document, as well. It can be tempting to rush through completing your appraisal to get it done, but this is your employment and career we're talking about. You've put in a lot of work and likely accomplished quite a bit, so it's worth to document it and acknowledge it. Though it might seem like it should be otherwise, your manager isn't always apprised of everything that you do, so it's up to you to let them know. Also, if for some reason your perspective is different from your manager's in other words, you think you're doing OK, and he or she doesn't you'll want to provide documentation as to your side of the argument on your appraisal. Be specific, clear, and detailed when completing your performance appraisal and complete it by the required deadline. Remember that it's just feedback I've seen employees stress and become overly sensitive to the information they receive during their performance review, even if the majority of the information is good news. Part of the feedback process is to provide areas for improvement, as we all have areas for growth and development. It's good to see these types of comments as an opportunity rather than something negative. Also, if your performance review doesn't go so well in your eyes, remember it's just information as to how one individual or organization sees your performance not a personal reflection as to who you are as a person. It's just feedback. There's been a lot of controversy in recent years as to whether or not performance appraisals cause more harm than good or are useful within organizations. A poll reported on TalentManagement360.com of 2,677 CEOs, HR employees, and other staff reported that 98 percent found performance reviews unnecessary. Performance feedback and conversations are important for employees and managers to have, and in many organizations, it's the approach to performance management that needs to be evaluated and revised to encourage regular, valuable, and useful communication regarding performance. Yet, effective performance appraisals can be of value to an organization for the numerous reasons listed in this article. With all that said, you own your career development. Performance management and the appraisal process are a part of the work environment that can be valuable components to support your career development if you treat it as such. If you don't receive the regular feedback you desire and deserve as part of your employment, it's up to you to take the initiative to get it. It's also up to you to share your accomplishments and work with your manager through conversations, as well as your organization's formal performance appraisal process. The Management Skills Levels Pyramid

The Management Skills Levels Pyramid The Management Skills Levels Pyramid Developing as a manager requires ongoing, personal commitment to mastering new skills and behaviors. The Management Skills Pyramid (Kammy Haynes) offers some guidance on where, when, and how one goes about developing into a successful leader. The following is an introduction to the topic of management skills development and includes an overview of the Management Skills Pyramid. Understanding the Role of a Manager Being  a manager is  a  difficult role to  have, more  so in todays fast-moving, ever-changing organization. While management skills are inherent in every leadership position, the “manager” label most often references those individuals responsible for teams and operational activities tasked with the bulk of an  organizations  work. Managers exist on the front  lines, behind the scenes, in customer-facing roles, and across the organization in various middle- and senior-level positions. Key Responsibilities of Managers Providing daily guidance for groups/teams of individuals to achieve specific functions or tasks in support of an organizations operating and strategic plans.Ensuring an organizations employees adhere to policies, processes, and standards of performance and behavior in the pursuit of daily work.Supporting the development of team members and teams through coaching, feedback, and goal-setting.  Participating in the hiring, evaluating, training, restructuring, and occasional firing of team members.   Providing feedback on group and individual performance to upper management according to standard operating procedure.  Collaborating with peers in other functional groups for cross-functional problem-solving and organizational improvement.  Engaging with other groups and  senior management  in strategy and goal development initiatives.   The Management Skills Pyramid To be successful, there are many skills a manager needs to cultivate, and it can feel like a daunting task. We will reference the Pyramids structure to give a snapshot of how these skills work together. Understanding how these management skills build on each other will help you achieve success in your  management career. Management Skills Pyramid, Level 1 Level 1 of the Management Skills Pyramid shows the basic skills a manager must master to ensure the work of the organization is completed at the right pace, quality, and cost. These are the  fundamentals of the management job: Plan:  Determine resource needs and necessary investments; schedule activities and work  teams and plan for future needs.  Organize:  Structure work teams; determine the report-to structure, and  establish processes for collaboration.Direct:  Provide daily guidance to ensure performance in alignment with company standards.Control:  Monitor, track, and report on output, efficiency, cost, and quality. Management Skills Pyramid, Level 2 Moving beyond the supervisory and basic management tasks, Level 2 challenges you to cultivate and strengthen your people management skills. These are frequently referenced as soft skills in management and leadership literature and encapsulate  Level 2 in the Management Skills Pyramid. You will use these skills to motivate and develop your staff. There are  many specific skills  required, but they are grouped into these categories: Motivation:  Creating an environment that encourages people to engage and deliver their best efforts.Training:  Ensuring your team members have the fundamental skills and knowledge they need to execute the tasks of your department.  Coaching:  Helping your team members discover how to improve performance and behaviors in support of higher individual and group achievement.  Employee involvement:  Encouraging collaboration for problem-solving and innovation in the pursuit of daily work tasks. Management Skills Pyramid, Level 3 As you strengthen your abilities at the lower levels of the Pyramid, your own self-development becomes increasingly important. Level 3 management skills  include: Self-management:  Motivating  and engaging with others, while navigating the challenges of daily work and management life.Time management:  Knowing how and where you invest your time throughout the day.   Time management  is often considered primary within Level 3. Taking control of your schedule ensures that you understand that time is your most precious resource. High-level managers know that they can invest their time or squander it. Therefore, they guard their time and consider it as important as financial resources. Management Skills Pyramid, Top Level The Management Skills Pyramid positions  leadership  as the pinnacle. While leaders are most often managers, not every manager is a leader. Leaders are focused more on defining a direction, crafting a vision, and making sure strategy aligns with the firms values and mission, and less on “tunnel vision” to the menial tasks or short-term needs.   Management Skills Development and the Pyramid While the Pyramid illustrates the skill sets of managers, in reality, individuals often inhabit multiple levels at the same time. All management jobs require elements in each level outlined in the Pyramid. Your own development will not necessarily proceed in a straightforward fashion, beginning at the bottom and moving systematically to the top of the Pyramid. Rather, choosing to get involved, challenging yourself, and adding intentionality to your work will naturally progress you through these levels organically. Key Takeaways Be Aware of the Skills You Need: Effective managers need many different types of skills to successfully lead and manage people. All management jobs require elements of each level outlined in the Pyramid.Build Your Management Skills: Understanding how your management skills build on each other will help you achieve career growth.Plan for Organic Career Growth: Your career development may not proceed in a linear fashion from the top to the bottom of the Pyramid.

How Professional Development Training Benefits Your Company

How Professional Development Training Benefits Your Company How Professional Development Training Benefits Your Company Professional development training is overlooked and underappreciated as an employee retention and recruitment tool. In fact, it’s often one of the first things to go when budgets get cut. Here are some reasons why investing in the growth and development of employees is a smart idea that is evergreen. Offering professional development training programs allows employees to perform better and prepares them for positions of greater responsibility. But it can also help employers attract top job candidates, retain their best workers and identify future leaders. Moreover, ongoing professional development is very appealing to many employees today who are looking to keep their skills relevant in a rapidly changing world. Investing in each of your workers is beneficial to the whole organization and can boost the bottom line. Following are six rewards you can realize if you support or provide professional development training initiatives: 1. You increase the collective knowledge of your team Encouraging your employees to train in relevant subjects and applications - an advanced course in a software program they use daily, for example - can have an immediate effect on productivity. Professional development can also help raise overall staff expertise when employees with vastly different backgrounds and levels of experience are encouraged to share information. Idea: Consider supporting continuing education by offering tuition reimbursement or covering the costs associated with pursuing industry certifications. Paying for employees to take a course offered by a local university or technical school can be a simple but invaluable way to help them grow their skills. You also might invest in a group membership to an e-learning training site, or simply allow employees to view educational webinars during working hours. 2. You boost employees’ job satisfaction When staff members can do their jobs more effectively, they become more confident. This leads to greater job satisfaction and improved employee retention. There are a range of low-cost professional development training options to choose from, including mentorships, job shadowing and cross training. Idea: Leverage the expertise you already have within your office. A mentor, for instance, can serve as guide and teacher and help mentees sharpen both their soft skills and technical abilities. Gaining practical knowledge, institutional insights and hands-on guidance is a highly effective way for mentees to become more valuable and versatile employees. 3. You make your company more appealing When you offer training and development opportunities, you’re building a positive reputation as an employer that cares about its workforce and strives to employ only the best. Your customers and clients will benefit, too, from the high level of efficient service they receive. And keep in mind that your employees are your brand ambassadors. When they attend conferences and seminars, they represent and reflect all that’s good about your organization. Idea: To encourage knowledge sharing after events, have brownbag lunches or ask team members to lead a meeting to share what they learned at an industry conference. Beyond helping the employee sharpen his or her presentation and teaching skills, these gatherings can boost the group’s knowledge base and help establish a greater sense of camaraderie. Competitive compensation is critical in the tug-of-war companies are waging over skilled professionals today. As you set compensation levels for new hires and talented team members, be sure to visit Robert Half's Salary Center. 4. You attract the right kind of in-demand candidates Do you want to attract the most highly driven and career-focused candidates when you post a job opening? Offer them more than just a competitive salary and benefits; paint an enticing picture of how they can grow professionally or expand the career avenues available to them if they come to work for you. Idea: In job postings and during interviews, actively promote that your company does all it can to help employees develop and refine their skills. But you should also play up your company’s learning culture and commitment to professional development training when meeting with potential employees at career fairs, conferences, networking lunches and other industry events. 5. You aid your retention strategy Your workers want to feel like they’re appreciated and making a difference. But they also want to feel like they’re gaining expertise and becoming more well-rounded. If your team members don’t feel challenged, or they sense stagnation in their careers, they'll look for advancement opportunities elsewhere. Lifelong learning exposes your employees to new experiences and keeps them engaged in their work. Professional development training helps build and maintain enthusiasm, but it also inspires loyalty. Idea: Make sure employees know that you care about their evolving professional interests and objectives. Check in regularly and communicate your desire to help them build a long-term career with your firm. Giving high-potential team members challenging “stretch assignments” along with ongoing professional development and skill-building opportunities is a winning combination for improved retention. 6. You make succession planning easier Do you feel like some employees clearly fall into the management material category? Leadership development programs are tools for grooming future leaders for your organization. If you’d like to be able to promote staff to managerial positions in the future, targeted training now can help you ensure your best and brightest are prepared to move up. Idea: Sending top employees to accredited leadership training seminars and conferences can be a great move. But it’s also important to expose promising candidates for executive- and management-level roles to different parts of your organization. These individuals may even work for other functions temporarily under the tutelage of seasoned leaders in those departments. The purpose of this type of professional development training is to help future leaders gain a more complete understanding of how the business operates, and to acquire a broad set of skills that will help them guide the firm through change. Finally, set a good example. Reinforce your commitment to professional development training by seeking educational opportunities for yourself. Research from the Center for Creative Leadership finds that it’s increasingly important for company leaders to take charge of their own learning. Plus, your promotion of professional development training to employees will be more impactful if it’s clear that you practice what you preach.
